Since Christmas Eve gritters from Surrey County Council have treated over 6000 miles of road – the equivalent distance of London to Tokyo.

39 gritting lorries used some of the 16,000 tonnes of salt the County Council had stockpiled ahead of the icy conditions.

Almost 1800 grit bins were filled in the run up to Christmas and several farmers also signed up to assist with spreaders and ploughs.
