Local residents gathered in Reigate’s Priory Park yesterday as part of of a nationwide Beacons of Light event to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War.
The beacon in Priory Park was lit at the event last night to symbolise the ‘Light of Hope’ that emerged from the darkness of war, and in commemoration and remembrance of the end of the conflict. A beacon was also lit at Tilgate Park in Crawley. They both joined a total of 1,300 beacons which were lit throughout the UK at 7 pm. Afterwards, at 7.05 pm church bells tolled in East Surrey and North Sussex joining those nationwide ‘Ringing Out for Peace’, as they did 100 years ago when news of the Armistice spread.
