Crawley Borough Council has launched a new crackdown on abandoned shopping trolleys.
Following feedback from residents, the Council’s cabinet now has the power to charge supermarkets and other retailers, for the collection, storage and disposal of abandoned shopping trolleys under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The cost for a supermarket to reclaim a trolley collected by the Council, ranges from £68 in the first week rising to £143 if claimed within 6 weeks.
Since the Council decision to adopt these powers, the number of supermarkets subscribing to the Trolleywise trolley retrieval service has increased.
