A man has been found guilty of murdering an 87-year-old in Reigate.
Guy Douglas Unmack, aged 46 years of Warren Road in Reigate appeared at Guildford Crown Court yesterday where he was found guilty of murder following a trial which lasted a week and a half.
His victim, 87 year-old Rosemary Hill was picking herbs on Sunday, 21 June 2020 when Unmack assaulted her by hitting her to the head with a cricket bat. Mrs Hill was taken to hospital where she sadly died on 25 June 2020. A post-mortem examination recorded her cause of death as a severe blunt force head injury.
Unmack was arrested shortly after the attack on suspicion of attempt murder. Following his arrest, he was assessed and deemed to be mentally unfit for interview and detention. He was placed under an involuntary order under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act and was subsequently moved to a secure hospital.
The investigation, named ‘Operation Baritone’ continued, with officers working to gather the evidence required, resulting in Unmack being re-arrested once fit to be interviewed and subsequently charged with murder on Wednesday 7, October 2020.
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Charlotte Rimmer said, “Guy Unmack was today found guilty of murder by the jury at Guildford Crown Court. He will next appear at Guildford Crown Court on 24 June 2021 to be sentenced.”
Unmack will be sentenced in two weeks.
