Crawley MP says furlough for Gatwick may need extending

Mr Smith MP says furlough will have to be extended for the aviation industry if it is unable to open in a meaningful way in the summer.

However, he says the best way to support airports such as Gatwick is to allow them to safely open as soon as possible.

For this to happen, he is calling for a pragmatic approach to amber and green list countries so we can use the ‘dividends’ of the UK’s vaccine success.

Last month saw 185,000 passengers fly from Gatwick, down from more than 3 million for the same period in 2019.
