Unpredictable seasons have caused ‘confused’ plants to flower at the wrong time according to the Royal Horticultural Society.
RHS gardens including RHS Wisley have noted the unusual appearance of both summer and Christmas roses or Hellebores flowering simultaneously, while autumn flowering plants and winter flowering mahonia are also in bloom. The lack of autumn frost and no prolonged cold spell means that leaves are able to cling on for longer. The mild Autumn has also impacted wildlife in RHS gardens with no sight yet of migratory birds, leaving bushes full of colourful berries.
The extra colour is likely to last just a couple of weeks though, as winter closes in and visiting birds arrive.
