Surrey More Healthy For Respiratory Issues

New figures have revealed that people in Surrey are less likely to die from respiratory illnesses than the rest of England.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show there were 77 deaths from respiratory illness for every 100,000 people in Surrey – meaning the area has fewer than the 94 for England as a whole.

Separate figures, also show 7.8% of adults in Surrey are smokers – lower than the UK average of 13.3%.

Local Football Update

Crawley Town picked up a crucial three points at the Broadfield Stadium on Saturday.  The Reds won 2-0 over League 2 relegation rivals, Rochdale.  The win lifts Crawley out of the relegation zone.

In the National League, Dorking Wanderers won 3-1 against Maidenhead United at Meadowbank.

Crawley’s New Town Hall Is Officially Opened

The new Town Hall in Crawley has been officially opened by councillors past and present. 

Members from the past 30 years gathered at the new Town Hall on The Boulevard last week for a small ceremony.  Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Jilly Hart, cut a ribbon to officially open the building which provides civic and office space for the council on the lower three and a half floors.  Above are five floors of Grade A commercial office space that will generate income to help maintain council services into the future. 

Some heritage elements from the old Town Hall have been moved to the new Council Chamber.

Surrey Libraries Receive £75,000 Funding

Surrey libraries have received £75,000 in funding from the Arts Council Cultural Investment Fund. 

The additional funding will help eight libraries in the county to continue to deliver their “Dynamic Spaces” project.  Ten libraries have already benefited from the first part of the project which provided flexible shelving. This enables spaces to be reconfigured to accommodate more events and services.  Reigate and Oxted libraries are among those who will receive flexible shelving from the new funding. 

The move comes as libraries are being used for a range of different activities following a rise in agile working and the increasing need for meeting spaces in the community.

Gatwick Airport Donation To Air Ambulance Charity

Gatwick Airport has donated nearly £30,000 to Air Ambulance Charity (Kent Surrey & Sussex). 

Staff from the airport visited the Air Ambulance Charity last week to present the cheque  for £29,328.

Gatwick took part in a range of activities to raise the funds, including the Run Gatwick half-marathon, FIFA World Cup sweepstakes and a Heli Hike fundraiser.

The money raised t could help fund aviation fuel to support more than 100 helicopter missions, purchase more than 300 boxes of tubing for the charity’s or buy 750 ‘nose balloons’ to stop bleeding.
