More Brits spent the August Bank Holiday weekend in the US according to figures released by Gatwick Airport.
Three of the 10 biggest growing long haul routes were to the US; Oakland, New York and Los Angeles. The number of long-haul passengers departing from Gatwick across the weekend increased significantly, up 14% year-on-year. Gatwick passengers also opted for Dubai for their long-haul Bank Holiday break – the city was the most popular long-haul destination last weekend, up 10.7% year-on-year.
631,000 passengers in total travelled through Gatwick making it the airport’s busiest Bank Holiday weekend on record.
Shorter breaks were also popular according to Gatwick’s figures with just under a third of the airport’s leisure passengers heading off on four-day trips; the biggest growing short haul destinations over the weekend were the East European cities of Ljubljana, Pristina and Varna.
