West Sussex Highways has said it is ready for when snow and ice hit the county.  It has a fleet of 22 gritters to call upon and has stockpiled 10,500 tonnes of salt at county council depots in preparation.  It has also held gritting “dry run” rehearsals known as Operation Snowflake to check staff and resources are ready for when winter bites.  Although Highways England is responsible for treating the M23, West Sussex County Council treats all other A and B roads and key routes.  

Surrey County Council’s fleet of 39 gritters are also prepared; Surrey has stockpiled 14,500 tonnes of salt and has secured the services of more than 50 farmers equipped with ploughs to clear snow.
