Local Elections in East Surrey and North Sussex

The Conservatives have suffered their worst defeats in the local elections in Surrey for more than 15 years.

The Tories lost their majority in Tandridge; no party has control of Tandridge District Council for the first time in almost 20 years. The now former leader of the council, Martin Fisher, lost his seat to the Oxted and Limpsfield Residents’ Group; he said the need to balance house-building with concerns over the greenbelt is an issue.

The Liberal Democrats have taken control of Mole Valley from the Conservatives who lost 10 seats; 9 to the Liberal Democrats and one to an independent.

The Conservatives lost six seats in Reigate and Banstead but retained control with a total of 29 councillors.

In Sussex, Labour is still in control at Crawley Borough Council; Labour has gained one seat taking its total to 19 while the Conservatives have lost one and now have 17.

In Horsham, the Tories maintained control but lost 13 seats with the Liberal Democrats picking up 10, the Greens two and independents one.
