Crawley Borough Council will no longer be accepting cheques as a method of payment after 31 March.

It currently costs the council £13 to process a cheque which occasionally is more than the value of the payment. This compares to just one penny to process a Direct Debit, plus a £1.75 set up fee.

Between 2019/20 the council received nearly seven and a half thousand cheques. However, this number dropped to just 360 in 2020/21 following a huge increase of online payments during the pandemic.
