Surrey man’s Santa letter found after 60 years

A Surrey man’s letter to Santa has been found up a chimney after 60 years.

The note, written by Robert Crampton’s father on his behalf, was discovered by chimney sweeps in Worksop in Nottinghamshire.

It says the five year-old Robert would like ‘a cowboy suit and guns and a hat and everything’, which Mr Crampton says he did in fact receive that year. The retired Surrey Police officer also added “I always wanted to be a sheriff, and I suppose I was in a way.”

The 65-year-old now says he hopes to be reunited with the find so his daughters have a memento of their grandfather.

Cheryl Thorne, officer manager at Sweeps Chimney Services who found the letter, said she was thrilled to see the original author tracked down. “I’m a sentimental person, and when we set this business up I told my husband I always wanted to find a Christmas letter,”

“It’s chimney treasure – it’s precious when you find something like this.”

The folded letter was found in a pile of soot after the chimney was swept.
