A hawthorn tree has been chosen as one of just 70 ancient trees in the UK, to be dedicated to the Queen’s Green Canopy, as part of this year’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
The tree next to Constable Road, Tilgate, is believed to be at least 225 years old and was put forward as a contender by the Woodland Trust.
It’s one of only two trees in West Sussex to be selected for the Queen’s Green Canopy, with the other being an oak tree in Cowdray Park, in Midhurst.
Crawley Borough Council are investigating how it can provide additional protection to the Hawthorn, as it is deemed to be quite fragile.
