As the warm weather continues, there’s an increased risk to fires on Surrey heathlands.
A report by the Wildlife Trusts revealed half its reserves have more than 30 days of very high fire risk each year and has named Surrey’s heathlands as being at particular risk.
The most recent is estimated to have affected more than 500 hectares, with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service on site for around three days.
James Herd is the director of reserves management at the trust, and he said: “Every wildfire is a potential tragedy for nature. It is deeply concerning that a changing climate is putting Surrey’s habitats at greater risk.”
