A government grant of almost £100,000 for energy-efficient LED lighting has ignited a brighter and greener future for East Surrey Hospital.
Across the site operated by Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, 720 LED fittings will be replacing old, fluorescent tubes – with LED light bulbs being more energy efficient and longer lasting compared to traditional luminescent and fluorescent lighting.
Out of over 170 bids, the Trust was one of the 48 successful applicants to secure this transformative NHS grant. The funding was awarded to NHS England by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and the Department for Health and Social Care.
Once all of the LED fittings are in place, the Trust anticipates savings of nearly £35,000 a year, alongside a remarkable reduction of 41 tonnes of CO2 emissions – the equivalent of just over 70 passenger’s roundtrip flights to Munich.
Paul Simpson, Deputy Chief Executive of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust and SASH green plan lead, said:
“We go above and beyond to secure vital opportunities like this, with the best interest of our patients, staff, local community and the planet in mind. This grant is another great step in our green plan as we work towards achieving a net zero NHS by 2040.”
