New Chief Constable for Sussex

Sussex has a new Chief Constable. Giles York’s appointment was confirmed yesterday (30 June).

He’s been temporary Chief Constable for Sussex Police since March of this year, having previously been a deputy with responsibilities for performance.

Mr Giles has cited that his first and most important priority is protecting vulnerable people.

He’s also keen on emphasising the importance of ethics and professionalism in the job.

Suspected Arson in Reigate

Firefighters were called to a blaze in Reigate in the early hours of last Saturday morning. The fire, which is being treated as suspected arson, broke out at the Old Reigatian Rugby Club in Park Lane.

No one was hurt, but there was significant damage to the clubhouse.

This is the third suspicious fire at sports clubs in the last week. The others were at Horley Lawn Tennis club last Sunday and at Chruchfields Bowls Club in Church Walk, Reigate last Thursday.

Police are looking at whether the fires were linked and have appealed to the public to contact them if they have any information.

Crawley Woman Cautioned for Fare Evasion

An 18-year-old woman’s been given a police caution for defrauding a bus company by altering tickets to allow her to travel for free on buses in Crawley.

The woman from Maidenbower, Crawley, admitted the offence after she’d altered the dates on the Metrobus tickets.

New Minister For Infrastructure Needed

Surrey County Council’s leader, David Hodge has said that Britain needs a new Cabinet Minister for infrastructure before any decision’s made on the expansion of Heathrow or Gatwick.

He told a group of aviation experts that there was a need to invest in transport, healthcare, education and housing if either airport’s plans are to go ahead and this needed to be co-ordinated through a single minister.

He added that he felt that airports are good for the economy, but expansion plans can only be supported if such infrastructure issues are properly addressed.

Man Attacked in Crawley Park

An 18 year-old man has been attacked in Crawley Park.

Around half-past five Tuesday afternoon the victim was approached by two men – both described as white, in their early 20s, of slim build between 5ft 6 and 5ft 9 inches tall.

The teenager was attacked and knocked to the floor. His mobile phone was taken and he was threatened further to give out his pin number.

Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the park at the time of the incident, including a woman who was seen nearby just before the attack.

They would also like to hear from anyone who may have been offered for sale a black iPhone 5c with white back.
