Merstham Cricket Club
Merstham Cricket Club will be celebrating its 150th anniversary this year with several special events.
Geoff Miller, who recently stepped down as chairman of selectors for England, has been confirmed as the guest speaker for the club’s anniversary dinner and dance, at Reigate Hill Golf Club on Friday August 15.
In September, Merstham will host the Cup Final of the Fuller’s League, the competition in which the first team plays.
And to start the season, the club will hold two NatWest Cricket Force weekends. The first, at its picturesque Quality Street headquarters, will be on April 5 and 6. The idea of these weekends is that clubs encourage their members and the local community to help prepare their grounds for the season.
Merstham now has six senior teams, a youth development XI, a disability side and sides from under eights upwards.
Weekend Sports Review
As you’ll have no doubt heard elsewhere, Crystal Palace had a wonderful afternoon defeating table toppers Chelsea on Saturday by a single John Terry own goal.
Not such good news for League One Crawley Town who suffered a 1-0 away defeat at Preston. The Reds are now just 6 points clear of the relegation zone but do have 3 games in hand over their rival teams.
Elsewhere, 4 goals from Marcus Elliott sealed a memorable 6-0home win for Redhill over Crawley Down Gatwick. Merstham took the points with a 1-0 away win at Tooting and Mitcham, while it was honours even for Three Bridges at Faversham town, with South Park beating Frimley Green 1-0 away.
