Tandridge Council Tax Scam
A council tax phone scam is operating in Tandridge.
Residents are being called by someone claiming to be able to reduce their council tax band and get them a refund if they pay a fee.
They are then asked for their bank details.
A spokesman for Tandridge District Council told us that they will never contact residents to ask for bank or other personal details.
They always ask residents to call the council direct on 01883 722000 so they can be sure they are talking to council officers.
If you know of anyone who has been contacted in this way, call Surrey Police on 101.
Football Update
In League 2, Crawley Town enjoyed a 3-1 home win against bottom of the table Newport County. Goals from James Collins, Josh Yorwerth and Jimmy Smith ensured that Newport would remain propping up the table at Christmas. The Reds move up to 11th place.
In the Ryman League, Merstham drew 2 all at Canvey Island in their premier division clash. In the Division 1 South, East Grinstead Town managed an impressive 4-2 away win at Cray Wanderers. The match between Ramsgate and Three Bridges was abandoned and South Park’s away fixture at Faversham Town was postponed.
Elsewhere, Horley Town came off best in a goal fest that saw them beat Windsor 5-3, while Redhill beat Dorking 2 nil at West Humble Playing Fields.
Surrey High Speed Broadband
The success of a scheme to make Surrey the best connected county in England has triggered a £3.8 million broadband windfall.
That is Surrey County Council’s share of funds made available by BT after better than expected take-up of fibre broadband.
Superfast Surrey connected around 86,000 homes and businesses that were not included in commercial roll-out plans after it was revealed that this could give the county’s economy an annual boost of nearly £30m.
The council’s project took the number of premises in Surrey with access to high-quality broadband to more than 96%.
The authority has signalled that it plans to use the cash windfall to give as many ‘hard to reach’ premises as possible access to a speedy service.
