YMCA East Surrey Grant

A local charity has been awarded £350,000 thanks to Surrey’s role in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey events.

YMCA East Surrey received the sum to help fund a new sports facility for people with disabilities and additional needs at the charity’s Redhill site.

The grant will also enable the centre to become a regional hub for Boccia, a sport designed for athletes with severe impairments.

The grant was among the latest awarded by the London Marathon Charitable Trust, which gives out proceeds from the RideLondon cycling festival.

More than sixty Surrey projects have now received grants which will benefit local communities for many years to come.

Richard Walsh, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Localities and Community Wellbeing, said: “This grant to YMCA East Surrey is great news and takes the total awarded to Surrey community groups and charities to more than £1.8million since the inaugural RideLondon-Surrey event in 2013.”

Southern RMT Drivers Strike Ballot

Drivers on Southern rail are to be balloted on industrial action in the ongoing row over driver-only trains.

The RMT union said its members would be asked to vote on both strike action and action short of a strike.

It has been embroiled in a bitter dispute with Southern over changes to the role of conductors.
Southern – which said the ballot move was “unnecessary” – wants drivers, rather than conductors, to operate carriage doors at certain times.

The RMT wants to retain the role of conductor, in addition to the driver, on trains at all times, citing safety.

The main drivers’ union, Aslef, is also balloting its members in the same dispute, raising the possibility of joint strikes in December.
