A project to transform an old lean-to glasshouse into a 21st century glasshouse and centre for horticultural training at Tilgate Park in Crawley, was officially opened last week (on Monday 8th August), by the Mayor of Crawley, Cllr Raj Sharma.
Already, five local unemployed people have begun training and there are plans to offer further horticulture-based traineeships from September.
At the same time, produce being grown in the glasshouse goes straight to the Walled Garden Community Café next door, giving visitors the chance to taste the freshest possible salads and vegetables.
The work, undertaken by environmental charity Groundwork South and funded with £26,500 from Grundon Waste Management through the Landfill Communities Fund, was completed earlier this year.
As if the recent rail strikes weren’t taxing commuters enough, a ceiling panel has fallen on top of passengers on board a London-bound train, Southern Rail has confirmed.
Two women were hit when the panel fell on the 07:45 Southern service from Tattenham Corner to Victoria yesterday morning (Thursday 18 August)
A 28 year old passenger said she suffered bruising and whiplash when the panel fell on to her shoulder.
Southern said no injuries were reported and have apologised and said a full investigation has been launched.
London Ambulance Service confirmed it did not attend the scene.
Surrey County Council’s introducing new charges for some non-household waste, including DIY or building waste, at nine community recycling centres from the beginning of next month (1 September).
This includes the site at Horley Road, Earlswood.
Charges will apply for waste from construction and alterations or repair of your home or garden, such as plasterboard and breeze blocks.
All Surrey residents will be able to take one bag or one item free per household, per day. Bicycle tyres can be disposed of free of charge.
The introduction of charges is being made as increased demand for essential services, along with reduced government funding, means Surrey County Council needs to reduce its spending in other areas.
A leaflet with details will be available from the CRCs and you can consult Surrey County Council’s website for more information.
For more details and a full list of the types of waste that will be charged for, visit the Surrey County Council website.
