Police Statement On Hate Crime In Sussex and Surrey

Sussex Police has not seen an increase in hate crimes reported over the weekend following the EU referendum last week.

It has been widely reported that in other areas of the country some people have been subjected to abuse since Friday last (24 June).

Apart from one report this has not been the case in Sussex.

Meanwhile Surrey Police released a statement noting the result of last week’s EU referendum and the significant impact it’s having our communities.

On the day of the referendum result, Surrey Police Chief Officers met to consider whether there were any immediate consequences that the force needed to adjust to. The conclusion was that until there was more certainty about the impact of the decision, there would be no change to policing at present.

If anyone thinks they may have witnessed or experienced hate crime, then they should not hesitate to contact police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.
