Caterham dog walker died from neck bites

A woman died from “multiple penetrating dog bites to the neck”, an inquest has heard.

Dog walker Natasha Johnston, 28, from Croydon, was set upon while walking a group of dogs at a popular spot in Caterham, Surrey, on 12 January.

A post-mortem examination showed she died from shock and haemorrhage, and her left jugular vein had been perforated.

A second woman was taken to hospital and treated for dog bites.

The hearing at Surrey Coroner’s Court was told Ms Johnston had been identified through dental records.

The coroner, Simon Wickens, said Ms Johnston had suffered “traumatic injuries”.

He went on to express his “sincere condolences” to her family “and all those touched by her life”.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Ms Johnston was not licensed to walk dogs in the area that she was attacked.

Tandridge District Council confirmed that professional dog walkers must hold a license to operate in the area.

In a statement issued through police shortly after the attack, Ms Johnston’s family said they were enduring “an extremely difficult time” dealing with their sudden loss.

Surrey Police also said no prosecutions would be brought following the attack.

Police seized eight dogs at the scene, which was a known dog walking spot.

The dogs are still subject to further forensic work, officers said.

The inquest has been adjourned until 29 June.

Surrey council tax rises restricted

Surrey County Council is planning to restrict a rise in Council Tax to 2.99% in the current budget plans for 2023/24.

The council’s Cabinet agreed the draft budget today outlining the planned rise, which is lower than the vast majority of other councils in the UK and far lower than the rate of inflation.

Surrey County Council spends just over £1bn a year on delivering vital services such as Adult Social Care, Children’s Services, maintaining roads and pavements, Surrey Fire & Rescue Service, libraries, countryside management and public health.

The budget also outlines the council’s five-year capital investment plan that will deliver more school places and improved school buildings, increased support for children with additional needs, road improvements, big infrastructure projects like in Farnham town centre, the River Thames flood defence scheme, grant funding community projects and increasing recycling capacity across Surrey.

Tim Oliver, Leader of the Council, said: “This budget is about protecting the services that the people of Surrey rely on, while being mindful of the huge pressures household budgets are under at the moment.

“The rise in the cost of living, inflation and interest rates have all impacted the council as an organisation, as well as our residents. Everything we do has simply become more expensive to deliver.

“However, we have worked hard over the last five years to ensure our finances are in a solid and stable state.

“We think it is important to only levy the absolute minimum we need to meet increased costs, in order to protect the money in people’s pockets as much as possible.

“We are making the decision to face this financial challenge in the fairest way possible, balancing our needs and ambitions with the immediate cost of living impact on our residents.”

The budget will go before a Full Council meeting on Tuesday 7 February to be ratified.

Crawley Town Football Club have announced the signing of Woking midfielder Jack Roles on a one-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Roles is an exciting attacking midfield player who first joined the Cards on a short-term deal towards the end of the 2021/22 season. He made ten appearances during his first campaign at Kingfield after joining the club from Premier League club Crystal Palace in February.

Roles had previously spent six years in the academy system of Tottenham Hotspur. He was highly thought of by Spurs and earned himself a two-year extension on his contract in the summer of 2019. The next year he enjoyed a successful spell on loan at League 2 side Cambridge United, scoring five times in 23 league appearances, winning the division’s Player of the Month Award once.

The Cypriot youth international had brief spells with Burton Albion and Stevenage, before ending a 16-year association with Tottenham to join London rivals Palace, following a successful trial.

Speaking on his move to the Reds, Roles said: “I am so happy and so grateful to everyone at Crawley for taking me on this opportunity. I found out a couple of weeks ago, and straight away, I thought if this could happen for me, it would be great. I have spoken to some of the lads I have known at Tottenham, and they have said what a great club it is, so I am looking forward to it.

Manager Scott Lindsey added: “We are incredibly excited to have Jack on board. He has a great pedigree coming from great academies with Spurs and Crystal Palace. He also has great experience in the Football League. He’s of a good age and is someone I am looking forward to coaching and trying to make a great player of.”

Interim CEO and Director of Football Chris Galley said: “Jack is a fantastic young, technical midfielder, who works incredibly hard and is a real danger in the final third.”

Crawley Town FC have also confirmed midfielder Jake Hessenthaler has joined National League side Woking on loan until the end of the season.
