Southern Rail owner pays more than £2m in compensation

Over £2m was paid out in compensation by GoviaThamesLink, the parent company of Southern Rail in 2015, 50% more than the year before.

While the company received more than £22m from Network Rail to compensate for disruption.  This money it says has gone straight to government.

Last December the consumer group Which lodged a ‘Super Complaint’, saying getting compensation from Rail firms was too complicated.

Figures out today also show 3.7m people commute more than 2 hours each day.

TFL to help challenge Heathrow Expansion

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has directed Transport for London to provide assistance and support to Councils and Greenpeace’s legal challenge to Heathrow.

The Mayor notable campaigned for extending Gatwick rather than the West London Airport.  However at the moment he has not said whether he is proposing this again as an alternative.

Gatwick says it still stands ready to proceed when the times comes.

Complaints about Police drop

Complaints about Sussex and Surrey Police dropped last year compared to the year before.

Recorded cases for Sussex Police were down 2.8%, while Surrey Police recorded a 5.6% decrease.

Most recent figures from the Independent Police Complaints Commission also show recorded allegations per 1,000 employees for Surrey Police is 100 – above the national average of 70.  Sussex Police is more than half that with 47.

Deprivation levels in parts of Crawley have risen

Deprivation and crime has increased in some parts of Crawley according to a new report.

The Sussex Uncovered 2 Report found, Broadfield South is now in the top 20 per cent of the most deprived areas of the UK.

While crime deprivation levels are now above the national average in the town putting it in the top 10 per cent of the country – with West Green in Crawley being ranked 2nd in Sussex.

It also shows Crawley has the largest ethnic minority population and the largest proportion of children in the county.

Sussex Community Foundation Report
