Crime Pays … For New Community Safety Measures

Criminals are paying for new crime prevention measures in Mid Sussex following a recent prosecution by Mid Sussex District Council.

In August 2015 Imran Shahid and Tariq Wasi pleaded guilty to converting greenfield land in Copthorne to an illegal airport car park.  The men failed to obtain planning permission and ignored a Stop Notice from the Council to cease trading and so continued to profit from the activity.  Mid Sussex District Council obtained a Confiscation Order under the Proceeds of Crime Act.  A Crown Court Judge ordered that the full amount be confiscated.

The Council has now received over eight and a half thousand pounds from the Home Office as its share of the proceeds under the Asset Recovery Incentivisation Scheme.

The money is being used to fund projects which reduce crime or the fear of crime in Mid Sussex.

East Grinstead Burglaries

Three burglaries have occurred in East Grinstead on the same afternoon.  The burglaries happened on Monday between midday and 5 pm in Southlands, Hurst Farm Lane and Browns Wood. Expensive items of jewellery and cash were stolen.

Sussex Police has increased police patrols throughout the area to deter further break-ins, but residents are asked to ensure that windows and doors are shut and locked.

If you saw anyone acting suspiciously, including cold callers, or suspicious vehicles or have any CCTV which covered these areas at this time, please contact Sussex Police via 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting serial 403 of 11/10.

Successful Gatwick Airport Policing Operation

There has been a fall in disruptive passengers at Gatwick Airport following a successful policing operation.

Over the past few months, Sussex Police has worked closely with Gatwick Airport, its pubs and bars, and airlines to prevent and reduce reports of problematic passengers at the airport and on flights.  Specific routes were targeted as part of Operation Disrupt which ran from 1st May until 30th September.  Officers also responded to reports of disruptive passengers on other routes.

A total of 113 incidents were recorded, 44 passengers were refused carriage due to their behaviour, a further 43 were given words of advice and 20 were arrested.  All figures are down from those issued in 2015.

Surrey Police support National Hate Crime Awareness Week

This week is National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

Surrey Police is supporting the campaign to put an end to hate crime in the county.

Last year in Surrey nearly 1000 hate crimes were reported to police.  That is an increase of almost 300 from the year before.

The Home Office suggests the actual number of incidents could be almost four times those reported as many people do not want to come forward.

A hate crime is any that targets a person because of a hostility or prejudice towards that person in relation to their disability, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation or transgender identity and the crime can take many forms.

You can join the conversation by following #HateCrime on the Surrey Police Twitter and Facebook page.
