Two Former Councillors To Be Made Aldermen

Tandridge District Council has made two former councillors Aldermen at its meeting last week.  The title is given to former councillors who, in the Council’s opinion, have provided eminent services to the district.  They must have also served for at least 20 years.  

The new Aldermen are Gordon Keymer and Hilary Turner.  Gordon Keymer served from 1987 until this year.  He was Leader of the Council for most of that time and represented the Oxted North and Tandridge Ward.  Hilary Turner served from 1995 until this year, representing Portley Ward in Caterham.

Belfry Car Park Temporary Closure For Repairs

The Belfry Shopping Centre car park in Redhill will be closed for repair on two Sundays.  It will be closed all day this Sunday 24th July and on Sunday 7th August.  In addition, it will close early on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week with last entry at 4 pm.  

In a statement on its website, The Belfry’s management says that while most of the work will be achieved during the working day, some activity is necessary outside of the normal working week.

 During its closure, the car parks at Marketfield Way, Gloucester Road, Clarendon Road and Linkfield Road can be used instead.

Prison Sentence for Caterham Attacker

A 20 year old man from Caterham has been sentenced to nine years imprisonment and will remain on license for a further two years, following an unprovoked attack on an innocent victim.  The incident occurred on 8th May in the Croydon Road area of Caterham.  

Liam Chambers pled guilty at Guildford Crown Court after being charged with section 18 GBH, affray and possession of an offensive weapon.   

Detective Constable Jack Poynter said the victim suffered serious injuries from multiple life threatening stab wounds to his back.  The victim is now making a full recovery.

Operation Dragonfly – Drink and Drug Drive Campaign Results

Surrey and Sussex Police have issued the final results from Operation Dragonfly, their summer crack down on drink and drug driving.  

A total of 108 people were arrested in Surrey alone and so far 66 of these have been charged.  Drivers found to be under the influence of drink or drugs can face a minimum 12 month ban, heavy fines, community sentences and in some cases, imprisonment.  

Surrey Police urges anyone who knows someone who drinks or drug drives, to report them.  Their road policing officers will then act on the information.

Oxted Town Centre Fire

Fire crews from Godstone and Reigate attended a fire in Oxted Town Centre on Wednesday evening.  The fire, involving underground electricity cables, occurred underneath a pavement in Station Road East.  There were no reports of any injuries.  Witnesses reported hearing an explosion and seeing black smoke.
