Adult Eduction In Surrey Is Good

A Surrey County Council service providing education for adults, including those with disabilities and learning difficulties, is performing well, according to Ofsted.

The authority’s adult learning service was judged to be ‘good’ following an inspection last month.

Ofsted said “learners make good progress on all courses”, praised staff who “go out of their way” to provide the support needed and highlighted strong management and leadership.

‘Sickness Is Genuine’ Say Southern Rail Conductor

A Southern rail conductor has spoken against claims that he and his colleagues are failing to turn up for work as a form of unofficial strike action.

In May the rate of sickness rose to 40, with an average of 83 trains a day being cancelled due to sickness.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the conductor said his sickness was for “a genuine reason”.

Southern managers are involved in a bitter dispute with the RMT union and have said services have been cancelled due to a sudden increase in sick leave.
Another strike is due next Tuesday.

126 Motorists Caught During Mobile Phone Enforcement Week

During a week-long operation, Sussex Police stopped a total of 126 motorists on suspicion of driving while using a mobile phone, or driving while distracted by other means.

The purpose of the campaign, which ran from 23 May to 29 May, was to target offenders and highlight the risks associated with driving while distracted.

Of those stopped for offences during the seven-day operation, 105 involved the use of a mobile phone.

101 drivers were issued with a fixed penalty notice or traffic offence report, three were given verbal warnings and one received a court summons.

Man Assaulted In Dorking

A man in his 20s was taken to hospital after being attacked in Dorking Town Centre.

The assault took place in South Street outside the Bulls Head pub around ten past one in the mourning on the 28 May.

An altercation took place between the victim and two other men, during which the victim was knocked unconscious and kicked to the head. The man was taken to East Surrey Hospital for treatment.

Two men, including an 18-year-old from Dorking and a 29-year-old from Horsham, were arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident, and have been released on police bail, pending further enquiries.

First Conviction Fo Operation Dragonfly

A man has been convicted following launch of Sussex Surrey Police summer crackdown on drink and drug-driving.

24 year-old Adem Hasa, a cleaner from Plymouth, was charged with driving almost double over the legal limit. driving without insurance and driving without a test certificate.

He appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Friday (10 June), where he pleaded guilty and was disqualified from driving for 17 months. He was also fined £550, and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £27 victim surcharge.

Since the beginning of operation dragonfly 45 people have been arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving offences.
