Vehicle abandoned following collision in Redhill

A vehicle containing items thought to be connected to recent burglaries in East Surrey was found at the scene of a collision.

A Sledgehammer, pick-axe, ladders and screwdrivers were discovered in a grey BMW which had collided with a fence on Holmthorpe Avenue in Redhill Saturday evening.

Detectives were initially called to Redstone Hill around half-past six after receiving information that a person was acting suspiciously in the rear garden of a property.  When police arrived, a vehicle was seen driving away.

A number of reports then came in from members of the public concerned with erratic driving.  Police then arrived at the scene of the collision.  The occupants had left the vehicle.

Surrey Search & Rescue respond to 300th call

A milestone has been reached by Surrey Search and Rescue.

The Surrey-based charity responded to their 300th call after forming just over four years ago.

The team now have close to 90 volunteers who are on standby to assist with incidents whenever called – night or day.

Their 300th call was to help search for a vulnerable person.

Lucky escape for family after tumble dryer catches fire in East Grinstead

A family had a lucky escape in East Grinstead after a tumble dryer caught fire in the early hours of the morning.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service were called to a semi-detached house on Lingfield Road just after 1.30 Friday morning.  The tumble dryer had been left running overnight and caught fire.

The family, which included three generations, managed to escape unharmed after their fire alarms sounded.

Fire crews are urging people to be aware of the risks of leaving electrical appliances running unattended overnight.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service Safety Advice:

. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your appliance

. Regularly clean the fluff or lint filter

. Don’t run your appliance overnight or while you are out

. Keep your tumble dryer in a well-ventilated area and ensure the vent pipe is not blocked or crushed

. Don’t overload your appliance

. Have your appliance serviced by a qualified engineer

CCTV stills released in connection with fraud in Crawley

CCTV images have been released of a man wanted in connection with recent telephone and courier fraud in Crawley.

During the last few days of February three elderly people were conned out of approximately £9000.

An 85 year-old woman was coerced into handing over bank cards losing over £3500; a 73 year-old man was contacted by telephone from someone claiming to be from a fraud squad and he, too, handed over bank cards to a courier where later just under £4000 was taken.

In a third case a 95-year-old man received a call claiming the victim had money connected to a robbery.  He handed over around £2000 to a man who collected at the door.

Surrey Police Officers and Staff Commended

Officers and Staff at Surrey Police have been recognised for outstanding performance.

A Divisional Commendation Ceremony was held last week and a number of people were commended for their determination, quick-thinking, tenacity and courage.

In one situation PC Elliott Hartley gave no thought to his own safety when he jumped into a pond after giving chase to a woman who had run off from East Surrey Hospital.
