Surrey campaign underway to keep cyclists and drivers safe

With cycling featuring heavily in recent days with a British winner claiming the Tour de France and the Prudential Ride London-Surrey taking place this weekend, a reminder is being issued to cyclists and drivers alike to stay safe on the roads.

A new cycle safety campaign has been launched by Surrey County Council and Surrey Police.

Data released shows almost one-in-three accidents involving cyclists in Surrey occurred when a vehicle crossed the path of the cyclist, such as turning at a T-junction or a roundabout.

However a further 23% of cycle-related accidents did not involve another vehicle but occurred when the cyclist lost control of the bicycle when at speed or braking.

Last year on Surrey’s roads there were four fatalities, 162 serious injuries and 482 slight injuries to cyclists.
