‘Road Rage’ incident in Crawley

An investigation is underway into a road rage incident in Crawley.

The driver of a black Toyota Yaris is believed to have gotten out of her car at the Bonnets Lane junction with Lowfield Heath Road.

She reportedly approached the driver of of a black Mini Cooper and punched her in the face before pulling her out the Mini by her hair.

The attacker then got back into her Toyota and drove away from the scene just before 6 o’clock last Monday evening.

The 23 year-old victim was left shaken but did not require medical treatment.

The Yaris had followed the Mini for some minutes from the Langley Green area, beeping and flashing headlights, culminating in the assault in Crawley.

The suspect was the bar manager at the Plough and Attic Rooms pub – he has since left the establishment but his whereabouts are unknown.

Police believe he may be working in fast food outlets in the Horsham area.

Firearm Amnesty

People in Sussex and Surrey have until Friday to surrender any unwanted firearms and ammunition to the police.

Since the campaign began over 80 firearms including air weapons, shotguns, revolvers, pistols and rifles have been handed over as well as over 1200 cartridges.

The surrender is an opportunity for those whose licence has lapsed or who do not hold a licence to dispose of those weapons and ammunition safely and without prosecution. However weapons may be analysed to determine if it has been used in crime and, if it has, it will be investigated.

New legislation came into effect on July 14 increased the maximum jail term for illegal gun possession from 10 years to life.

Advice from Sussex Police:

  •  Anyone wishing to hand in firearms should disarm them and put them in a box or strong bag.
  • Ammunition should be placed in a separate box or bag.
  • Ensure they are covered from view on your way to a station and when you arrive tell a member of police staff that you are there to surrender a weapon before you reveal it.
  • Please do not hand any such items to police officers or staff in the street as they are not equipped to deal with firearms and the sight of weapons could cause unnecessary alarm to members of the community.

If you cannot take your firearm or ammunition to a station, email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 to arrange an appointment when an officer will visit you to collect it.

If you have any information about the possession of an illegal firearm or criminal activity related to weapons, email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk, call 101 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Consultation on Three Bridges Train Station

Proposals for the development of Three Bridges Train Station have been unveiled by Crawley Borough Council.

Working in partnership with Southern Rail and West Sussex County Council, Crawley has released two proposals aimed at improving access and safety.

One option proposes changes that impact the way pedestrians, cyclists, cars, buses and taxis access and move around the station forecourt, including changes to the highway. The second option impacts how cars and taxis move around the station without making changes to the exit and entrance or the highway.

Residents, businesses and rail users are being urged to have their say on the proposals, ahead of a decision by Councillors in February.  Work would be expected to start in 2016, lasting 6 to 12 months.

A series of exhibitions are being held at Crawley library, Three Bridges Train Station and County Mall throughout November:

  • Tuesday 18 November, 6.00-7.00pm, Crawley Library
  • Wednesday 19 November, 5.00-7.00pm, Three Bridges Train Station
  • Saturday 22 November, 10.00am-2.00pm, Crawley Library
  • Wednesday 26 November, 10.00am-2.00pm, County Mall Crawley
  • Thursday 27 November, 10.00am-2.00pm County Mall Crawley
  • Saturday 29 November, Three Bridges Train Station, 10.00am-12 noon.

The consultation closes on 5th December.

Candle Fire Safety Week

This week is Candle Fire Safety Week.

Candle and tea light fires are the cause of around 350 casualties each year with nearly 40% of those resulting in death or injury.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has issued advice for the safe enjoyment of candles:

. Never leave a burning candle unattended

. Place candles carefully. Make sure they are on a stable surface, out of the reach of pets and children, and keep them away from flammable objects like curtains, furniture, bedding or books

. Don’t move candles once they are lit

. Don’t burn several candles close together as this might cause the flame to flare

. Never put tea lights on top of TV sets or other plastic surrounds like baths

. Always put scented candles in a heat resistant holder. These candles are designed to liquefy when heated to maximise fragrance

As today is Tuesday, remember to ‘Test It Tuesday’ – test your smoke alarm.
