The regeneration of Merstham has taken a step forward.

Work on the Iron Horse site is due to begin next month.

The project is a collaboration between Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, Surrey County Council and Raven Housing Trust.

Principal Contractor W. Stirland will construct a three-storey building on the former Iron Horse public house site.

It will consist of four retail units and ten flats; and is scheduled for completion by Spring 2016.

Meanwhile work to regenerate community facilities on the Triangle Site is due to get underway later this month.

A teenager has been raped in Crawley.

The 18 year-old was attacked on a cyclepath off Haslett Avenue East in Three Bridges.

The victim was found just before 11.30 Saturday evening.

Police believe the assault happened around 11 o’clock and are asking anyone who was in the vicinity at the time who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to dial the non-emergency number 101.

Relegated Crawley Town have announced that manager John Gregory has left the club.

John was appointed in December 2013 but unfortunately had to relinquish the role in December 2014 to undergo major heart surgery.

Thankfully, John is now on the road to a full recovery and thanked the club for their support over the last 18 months.

Other staff leaving the club at the end of the season were Head Coach Paul Groves, Head of Medical and Sports Science Niall Clark, Physio Luigi Cerullo and Chief Scout Lil Fuccillo.

The result of the inquiry into the need for a new airport runway in the south-east may be delayed for more public consultation.
Sir Howard Davies, the chairman of the Airports Commission, has decided to take further evidence on problems caused by air pollution.

His decision comes after a Supreme Court ruling in April, ordering the UK to do more to improve air quality.

The consultation will begin immediately and end on Friday 29 May.
The commission has already recommended three options, one of which was a new runway at Gatwick.

In last Thursday’s local elections, Labour just managed to hang on to Crawley Borough Council with 19 councillors compared to 18 for the Conservatives.

With Henry Smith having been re-elected as Crawley’s MP, and Labour losing Southgate and Ifield, it looked as if the Conservatives could take back control of the Council. But with Labour just managing to hold on to to Bewbush, they ended up in control with just one seat more than the Conservatives.

Reigate and Banstead and Tandridge councils remain unchanged and in Conservative control.
