Sussex Drug Driving Crackdown

Motorists who get behind the wheel after taking drugs are being targeted in a new road safety crackdown across Surrey and Sussex. Legislation that came into force today (2 March) sets legal limits for how much of a substance motorists can have in their system while driving.

A new device has also been approved that will allow officers at the roadside to test if a motorist has taken cannabis or cocaine.

Any drivers who fail the tests will be arrested and taken to a police station where they will be asked to provide a blood sample.

The change in the law is designed to make it quicker and easier for drug-drivers to be prosecuted – meaning more of the dangerous motorists can be removed from the streets.

Illegal drugs covered by the new rules include cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy, heroin and ketamine.

Medicinal drugs covered include diazepam, methadone and morphine.

The limits for these drugs have been set after advice from a panel of medical experts, at the level where the substances begin to affect driving.

Food Hygiene Stickers

Customers are taking advantage of more food hygiene information following a campaign by Crawley Borough Council.

The council’s taken part in a project to encourage Crawley food businesses to display Food Standard Agency stickers showing their hygiene rating.

The project focused on takeaways, restaurants and shops around the borough which had a rating of three, four or five but were known not to be displaying their sticker.

Officers then visited with these businesses, explaining the importance of displaying their score and the benefits of doing so.

As a result of these visits, many of the “non-displaying” businesses agreed to display their score.

Food Standards Agency research has found that around half of businesses displaying their rating have found it’s having a positive impact on their business.

Currently, the display of the food hygiene rating score is voluntary. For more information visit www.crawley.gov.uk/foodsafety and www.food.gov.uk

Aggressive Driving in Reigate

Surrey Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed a car being driven in an aggressive manner through Reigate as part of their burglary investigation.

On Thursday 19th February, a dark coloured hatchback, was pulling out of Doods Road and turning right on to Croydon Road. It’s thought the car forced a white vehicle to brake hard and officers would like to trace the driver of this vehicle.

Police believe the car being driven aggressively was connected to recent burglaries at properties in the Doods Road area.

Four burglaries and a criminal damage offence occurred in this area around the time the car was seen.

Anyone who can assist officers with their investigation is urged to contact Surrey Police quoting reference 45150014184. Information can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
