Man from East Grinstead jailed for GBH

A man from East Grinstead has been jailed after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm.

32 year-old Liam Coaker was sentenced to a total of nine years and eight months; with the final three years on prison release licence.

Last year the bricklayer attacked his former girlfriend and her 27 year-old companion with a golf club after entering her family’s home in King George’s Avenue.

The force of the attack broke off the head of the golf club.  Coaker then continued to use the broken end in a stabbing motion.

Her family came to the rescue, intervening and restraining him.  By this time, however, both victims suffered serious injuries.

Planned £25,000 upgrade to pedestrain crossing in Ifield

A busy pedestrian crossing in Ifield is set to be upgraded.

The proposed scheme will see the implementation of a toucan crossing on Ifield Avenue to the north-west of the A23.

Both cyclists and pedestrians will be able to activate it and detectors will be used to ensure traffic is held until pedestrians have finished crossing.  LED displays will also be installed which are brighter yet have lower energy consumption.

The £25,000 upgrade has been proposed after complaints were received by Crawley Borough Council about the visibility of the signals, lack of time to cross and the brightness of the signal.

Funding has come from developer contributions as part of the Apple Tree Farm new homes development.

Reigate Hill Aircraft Memorial

A memorial’s been unveiled for a World War Two American aircraft crew who died when their plane crashed 70 years ago on Reigate Hill.

It follows two years of research into the area’s wartime past by conservation organisations in Surrey.

Researchers discovered the crew from the 384th Bomb Group were on their 13th mission together and on their return, cloud led to visibility problems and the aircraft crashed into Reigate Hill in a huge explosion.

A memorial made of two wing tips carved by sculptor Roger Day and including aluminium from the fuselage, has been placed at the site.
