Fire crews collecting unwanted clothing in West Sussex

There is a call for unwanted clothing and textiles by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.

They are raising money for The Firefighters Charity which supports injured firefighters and their families.

This month a national campaign is running to gather more clothes and textiles as every tonne gathered is another £220 to the charity.

Bright yellow recycling clothing banks are located across the fire stations and office locations, including Crawley Fire Station, Crawley Training Centre and Horsham Fire Station.

Man in mankini removes mural in Reigate

Spectators were treated to a strange sight in Reigate at the weekend.

A man wearing a mankini removed a mural off a wall in Lesborne Road as a fundraising stunt.

The mural was created in August to raise awareness and funds of the Hope For Isaac campaign.  Following some complaints, it was agreed the artwork would be removed – but in a manner which would help to boost the campaign’s publicity.

Mark O’Connor, a friend of the artist ‘Uncle Stubble’ who created the mural, removed the artwork using a toothbrush and some paint, dressed only in a mankini.

Louise Elliott started the Hope for Isaac campaign to raise £40,000 for her one-year-old son living with cerebral palsy.  Miss Elliott wants him to undergo an operation in America which may improve his quality of life considerably.

Commuters greeted with problems at Redhill

Passengers faced disruption yesterday as a signalling problem halted Southern and Thameslink services into London.

One of the busiest days of the year, Monday saw people return to work following the festive break.

However a signalling problem meant no trains on the Redhill to Purley Line were running out of Redhill, Merstham and Coulsdon South during the morning rush-hour.

Bins and Football

Two ‘firsts’ took place at Salfords Based Monotype FC between Christmas and New Year.

The under-9s played their first match and sponsors Netkandi Limited provided a community football first by rolling out branded wheelie bins in club colours for the match on December 28.

Manager Mark Lodge’s new junior team contested four quarters of 10 minutes each on a cold, frosty morning and despite pushing hard lost 4-0 to South Park

And in last weekend’s Football, Crawley’s League one match at Chesterfield on Saturday was postponed, as were many matches in the Ryman League. The only local match to take place ended in a 3-1 away defeat for Redhill at Whitstable Town.

Thefts from Horsham Car Park

Two cars in a Horsham car park were broken into on New Year’s Eve.

They were parked in Piries Place Car park and the thefts occurred in the late evening or early hours of New Years Day.

Two jackets, a rucksack, Nike Trainers and a holdall were among the items stolen.
