Henry Santa Smith (MP)

Crawley MP Henry Smith has put on his Father Christmas outfit early this year to raise awareness of Wear a Santa Suit Day.

This takes place on Friday 12th December and is in aid of Children’s Hospice Chestnut Tree House.

He said he would go about his duties as Crawley’s MP on Wear a Santa Suit Day dressed up as Father Christmas.

Mr Smith has set up a JustGiving page to help Chestnut raise funds this year.

High Speed Broadband

A key milestone has been reached as the 500th high speed broadband cabinet in a project to make Surrey the best connected county was unveiled by Council deputy leader Peter Martin.

More than 75,000 businesses and homes that would otherwise have missed out on the opportunity to get better broadband are now covered by the high-speed technology.

The Superfast Surrey project is hoping to reach more than 80,000 premises which fall outside the private sector’s commercial plans. It aims to create a county-wide network to ensure nearly every community enjoys the benefits of the digital world.
The 500th cabinet was installed in Oxshott.

Surrey Care Homes Closing

Six local authority-run care homes in Surrey are facing closure because of the unsuitability of the buildings.

Surrey county council has said that the buildings were not designed to meet present standards for accommodation.

The homes are Brockhurst in Ottershaw, Park Hall in Reigate, Cobgates in Farnham, Dormers in Caterham, Longfield in Cranleigh, and Pinehurst in Camberley.

Over 400 jobs are under threat and Surrey County Council has begun a consultation on the future of the homes following a comprehensive review.

Police Clock Operation

Police in Sussex, Surrey, Thames Valley and Kent are to work together to target cross-county burglars as the clocks go back.

For the first time, officers from each force will work together during a three-week burglary campaign to catch offenders and educate residents to try to prevent them from becoming victims.

Officers regularly liaise with colleagues across the region about individual offenders or crime gangs but in the past ran operations at different times of the year, meaning that burglars could simply switch their attention to homes across the border during the campaigns.

This year the new approach means that one campaign will stretch from Chichester in the west to Margate in the east and as far north as Milton Keynes – an area of more than 5,600 square miles and more than six million people.

Fire Information Day

A special information day for older people and those who care for them is being held by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

The aim is to help older people stay safe, confident and independent, with advice on benefits, fraud, security awareness, dealing with degenerative conditions and reducing the risk of fire in the home.

The event is being held at Crawley Library on Saturday 1st November from 10 o’clock in the morning.
