Drink Drive Crackdown Still Having Effect

Effects of a crackdown on drink-and-drug driving over the Christmas period is still being felt.

Another 23 drivers have been banned from the road after being caught by Sussex Police over the festive period.

One such driver is 58 year old Michael Nunn. He was arrested after his car struck three parked vehicles in Lingfield Road, East Grinstead back in December. Nunn pleaded guilty to drink-driving and has been banned from driving for 20 months, fined £475 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

91 people have now been convicted of offences during the crackdown – a further 54 drivers are currently on bail.

Redhill Charity Football Match

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and Surrey Crimestoppers are set to benefit from a charity football match being held later this month.

Coaching staff from Chelsea Football Club Foundation will play the Reigate & Banstead Mayoral XI at Redhill Football Club on 23rd March.

The Mayor of Reigate & Banstead, Cllr, Dr Lynne Hack, is hosting the match to raise funds for her chosen charities.

Former England cricketer and local resident Phil Tufnell will also take to the field – acting as a goalie during a half-time penalty shoot-out with pupils from local schools.

E-Cigarettes Warning on No Smoking Day

E-Cigarettes May Pose Fire Hazard

Wednesday 12th March was No Smoking Day and West-Sussex firefighters are warning of the dangers of e-cigarettes following the investigation into a fire at a care home in Chichester last month.

The fire has been attributed to the battery pack of an electronic cigarette which had ruptured and projected heated battery components across the room igniting nearby bedding.

Nobody was injured,but severe heat and smoke damage was caused to the bedroom.

New Mid Sussex Leisure Contract Awarded

Mid Sussex District Council has awarded a new contract set to improve the council’s leisure industry, to DC Leisure.

The 15 year contract will see immediate improvements to the leisure centres including The Kings centre in East Grinstead, with over £1.7m to be invested into extensions to the gyms and to new equipment being installed.

New café areas will be created and swimming will be free for children under eight years old. 16 to 24 year olds able to swim for £1.

The new contract is due to start on 1 July 2014.

Redhill Memorial Park Temporary Closure

Redhill’s Memorial Park is due to be closed this summer while a £1.5m revamp is carried out.

The park will be closed for 6 months from the 24th of march and will re-open in the autumn.

The work will include building a new cafe pavilion and toilets, creating a sports zone and an extra tennis court, and installing a new children’s play area.

The cycle route and footpaths will also be improved.
