Change of half-way stop for Veteran Car Run

The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run holds pride of place for many people in their calendar. It is an opportunity to line the 60 mile route from Hyde Park to the seafront cheering on hundreds of pre-1905 manufactured vehicles.

This annual event commemorates the Emancipation Run of 14th November 1896.

It celebrated the passing of the speed limit for light locomotives from 4mph to 14mph and abolished the need for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot, carrying a red flag.

This November will celebrate 118th anniversary of the very first run.

Yet has it lost some of its spectacle?

Susy Radio has learned that the location of the half-way stop in Crawley will be moved this year.

For the past 19 years it has been in High Street. Now it is heading to the London Road. A change of coffee stop from the historic George Hotel to the modern Honda dealership, one of the event sponsors.

Over the coming days Susy Radio will be exploring this change. Is it for the best, a necessary move improving the experience, or are we looking at a loss of tradition?

Rt Hon Henry Smith MP for Crawley spoke with Susy Radio’s Natalie Osborne on hearing the news for himself.

SUSY Radio at the Gatwick Diamond Expo

SUSY Radio attended the Gatwick Diamond Expo held on Wednesday, 2nd April at the K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley.

Over 100 local companies were represented, all selected for their service, quality and reputation.

The exhibition was opened at 9.30am by Rt Hon Henry Smith MP and remained open until 5:00pm that afternoon.
It was an opportunity for company representatives to “network”, and to find new customers and suppliers.

The event was supported by Crawley Borough Council, Gatwick Diamond Business, Federation of Small Businesses, BNI Sussex and the local Chambers of Commerce, and it is hoped that the Gatwick Diamond Expo will become a regular occasion on the local business calendar.

Merstham Cricket Club

Merstham Cricket Club will be celebrating its 150th anniversary this year with several special events.

Geoff Miller, who recently stepped down as chairman of selectors for England, has been confirmed as the guest speaker for the club’s anniversary dinner and dance, at Reigate Hill Golf Club on Friday August 15.

In September, Merstham will host the Cup Final of the Fuller’s League, the competition in which the first team plays.

And to start the season, the club will hold two NatWest Cricket Force weekends. The first, at its picturesque Quality Street headquarters, will be on April 5 and 6. The idea of these weekends is that clubs encourage their members and the local community to help prepare their grounds for the season.

Merstham now has six senior teams, a youth development XI, a disability side and sides from under eights upwards.
