Weekend Sports Review

Matt Tubbs scored twice as Crawley beat Walsall 2-1 in their first game in a month.

The Reds, who hadn’t played since the 25th of January, remain just two points clear of the relegation zone, but have 7 games in hand over some of the clubs near the foot of the table.

In the lower leagues, Merstham had a good result on Saturday, winning 3-1 at Corinthian Casuals, while Redhill suffered a 3-1 defeat at Peacehaven and Three Bridges came out 3-0 winners at home. Horley Town suffered a 2-0 defeat away at Wembley, but the result of the day was undoubtably South Park’s 8-0 home thrashing of Alton Town.

Three Bridges Bomb Scare

Three buildings were evacuated yesterday morning (Thursday 20 Feb) after a bomb scare.

Concerns were raised when a suspicious letter was found at the office of Henry Smith, the Conservative MP for Crawley.

A bomb disposal team was sent to the building in Stephenson Way, Three Bridges to examine the envelope.

They later established that the package was not harmful.

Gatwick Eateries Win Award

Two eateries at Gatwick Airport have become the latest recipients of Crawley Borough Council’s Eat Out Eat Well awards.

The Green Room in the North Terminal and The Great Place to Be in the South Terminal achieved the highest gold standard for their excellent attitudes to healthy eating.

This award has been operating in Surrey for several years and following its success in Crawley, has been extended to the rest of Sussex.

Whitepost Hill Re-opened

Whitepost Hill in Redhill has now reopened following repairs caused by a burst pipe on a 15 inch main late in the evening of Friday 7 February.

The main was repaired the following morning, but the road works took longer because the damage caused by the leak extended over an area in excess of 400m2.

Thames Flood Centres

River levels on the Thames have started to fall and work is now underway to help communities get back on their feet.

Councils all across Surrey are setting up flood recovery centres where people can get information and advice to help them recover from the effects of the severe weather.
Seven centres are to be opened across the county and the Environment Agency and Public Health England websites also provide help and advice.

Residents whose insurance policies cover flooding should contact their insurers at the earliest possible opportunity.
