Plans for a high rise tower block in Redhill town centre have been rejected at the planning stage.  Reigate and Banstead Borough Council’s Planning Committee voted against the development last week.

The proposal would have seen 255 new homes and the redevelopment of Redhill railway station.  Over 2,000 letters of objection were sent.   As well as the height of the tower blocks, complaints included the loss of 40 car parking spaces at the station and potential congestion around Redstone Hill.  Jan Sharman, Vice Chair of East Redhill Residents’ Association told BBC Radio Surrey that the decision is “a massive relief”.

Development Director at Solum Regeneration, Andrew Atkins says he is “disappointed”, will be reviewing the decision and considering next steps.

Sex offender returned to prison

A sex offender from Horley has been sent back to prison after breaching the conditions of his Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

67-year-old, Clive Edward Ellis, was sentenced in 2007 to a 999 month indeterminate public protection sentence. He was released on a strict licence in April 2013.

Officers from Surrey Police’s High Harm Perpetrator Unit conducted an unannounced visit at Ellis’ home on 8 October, where they found six undisclosed internet-enabled devices, thereby breaching the conditions of his SHPO.

Ellis will remain in prison indeterminately.

Businesses fear parking price increase will drive away customers

Businesses in Horsham fear a car park increasing its charges by 294% will reduce footfall in the town centre.

Twelve car parks will see an increase on Sundays of at least £2.20 from April next year – but Piries Place in the town centre will see the largest rise from £1.70 to £6.70 to park all day.

For the Monday to Saturday increases, the council will add between 10p to 30p on a stay of up to two hours.

Horsham District Council said the increase is the first in two years but it had to make “tough decisions” to avoid cutting essential services.
