A community initiative in Banstead that offers affordable, healthy food has celebrated its opening with a launch event.

The Banstead Pantry is part of the national Your Local Pantry network and has been jointly funded by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, Good Company, and Raven Housing Trust together with some government funding.

Residents can apply to be members of the Pantry or referrals can be made by partners such as the Council and local food banks.  Membership is not means tested but aims to support those who may be struggling with the cost of living.  It also serves as a community hub offering workshops and social activities.

The initiative already has a team of 20 volunteers and over 70 households currently holding membership.

Football Update

Crawley Town are third from bottom in the League One table after losing 5-3 at home to Shrewsbury on Saturday.

Dorking Wanderers won their National League South match 3-2 at home to Hemel Hempstead.

Redhill FC remain top of the Combined Counties League Premier Division South despite losing 4-1 to Cobham FC.  It was the Lobsters’ first loss of the season.

Further Funding for Safer Redhill Partnership

The Safer Redhill Partnership has received further funding of £1,000,000 from the Home Office. The ‘hotspot’ funding will allow police to maintain uniformed patrols in the town and take strong action where needed.

Funds of £265,000 were awarded last Autumn to the Safer Redhill Partnership from the government’s Safer Streets fund; this saw the launch of the YMCA’s Y Bus for targeted youth outreach work and additional lighting in Memorial Park.

A new campaign, expanding on a trial during the summer, encourages local people to be part of the solution for tackling anti social behaviour by reporting it.  From this month, the campaign can be seen on posters, banners and digi screens throughout the town centre.

Millwall goalkeeper on loan to Crawley Town

Crawley Town have signed Millwall goalkeeper Connal Trueman on a seven-day emergency loan.

The Red Devils’ first-choice goalkeeper Joe Wollacott is away on international duty while his understudy Eddie Beach is injured.

Under EFL rules, clubs can lend a goalkeeper on an emergency basis outside of the transfer window should they have no senior cover.

Church of Scientology ask council for HQ protest ban

The Church of Scientology has asked Mid Sussex District Council to impose an order stopping people from protesting outside its British headquarters in East Grinstead.

A request for a Public Space Protection Order was submitted in the hope of preventing protests like the one held by ex-Scientologists last November outside the grounds in Saint Hill Road.

Scientology became a recognised religion in the UK in 2013.

Alexander Barnes-Ross, a spokesman for the ex-Scientologist group, said such an order would be a “direct threat to their freedom of speech and right to protest”.
