Big Leaf Foundation’s Refugee Week Football Tournament

Teams from the community in Surrey took part in a charity football tournament as part of the Refugee Week 2024 celebrations.  It was arranged by the Big Leaf Foundation which supports displaced young people through activities, projects and events to combat social isolation and improve wellbeing. 

This year’s tournament saw displaced young people playing matches alongside teams from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, Surrey Police and local businesses. 

The event also provided a platform for the young people to explore career pathways with several showing an interest in a career with the fire service.

Prime Minister: Former Oxted Resident and Reigate Grammar Pupil

Former Oxted resident, Sir Keir Starmer, has been elected Prime Minister following Labour’s victory in yesterday’s General Election. 

Sir Keir grew up in Oxted.  After passing the 11 plus exam, he got a place at Reigate Grammar School which became a private school two years later for new pupils.  In 2008 he became Director of Public Prosecutions receiving a knighthood in 2014 for his services to criminal justice. 

Sir Keir Starmer was first elected to Parliament in 2015 at the age of 52 and serves as the member for Holborn and St Pancras.  He has served as the Shadow Immigration Minister and the Shadow Brexit Secretary.  Sir Keir was elected Leader of the Labour Party in 2020.

General Election 2024: Voters go to the polls

Voters will be heading to the polls today to decide on who will represent their constituency and ultimately who will become the Prime minister.

Polls open at 7am and close at 10pm. Polling cards will tell you which polling station to go to.

Voters must remember to bring valid ID.

Results will come in during the night and tomorrow morning.
