‘Closing fire station could be detrimental for public’, say union

Plans to close a Surrey fire station could be detrimental to public safety, the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has said.

Banstead fire station could move to Godstone under proposals by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS).

The fire service said moving the station nine miles away would still mean the average response time to a critical emergency would still be under the 10-minute target.

But FBU secretary Karl Jones called on the service to find a different location as “the public should not be exposed to potential greater response times”.

Change of Opening Hours at Crawley Urgent Treatment Centre

Residents in Crawley are opposing to a cut in opening hours at an urgent care centre.

The once 24-hour Urgent Treatment Centre at the hospital has now been changed to only open from 7.30am to 10pm as part of a pilot scheme by the NHS who want to ensure “safe staffing levels”.

Anyone needing overnight help are being advised to use the NHS 111, or attend emergency departments for life saving care, such as the East Surrey Hospital at Redhill.

Residents have been voicing their concerns over the additional length of time it may take to travel to alternative centres, which could influence any treatment required.

Appeal for Information following Reigate Assault

Surrey Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in Reigate.

Officers were called to the high street late on Thursday evening outside The Market Stores Pub following reports of affray between four people.

Two teenagers were arrested on suspicion of Affray, whilst two adults received medical treatment at the scene.

Extended hours at 4 Surrey Libraries

A plan to introduce extended opening hours at four libraries in Surrey has been rolled out.

The Super Access scheme has been introduced for users in Egham, Camberley, Dorking and Horley.

Membership will allow library entry outside normal opening hours and access to most services even when staff are not present.

Surrey library users need to upgrade their membership to participate in the scheme, according to SCC.

Gatwick Express celebrates 40 years

The Gatwick Express has marked its 40th anniversary by giving away free commemorative ruby waistcoats.

The rail passenger service first opened to the public on 14 May 1984.

The Gatwick Airport train station opened in 1958, providing travel between London and Brighton.

Due to the growing popularity of the service, the Gatwick Express was launched 26 years later
