Charity Football Match – Reigate & Banstead Mayoral XI

Next Sunday 23rd March is the date of a special charity football match organised through the offices of the Mayor of Reigate and Banstead, Councillor Dr Lynne Hack. The match is being played in support of the Mayor`s chosen local charities this year, The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and Surrey Crimestoppers.

The match will be played between the Mayoral team consisting of players selected from local football clubs against a Chelsea team that includes some ex-players now employed at Chelsea in a coaching capacity.

The charity football match, which has received financial support from two local companies, is being played at Redhill Football Club’s ground at Kilnbrow. At half time, there’s a penalty shoot involving local children selected by the clubs participating in the Mayoral team, with local celebrity, Phil Tufnell as the goalie. After the match the children involved in the penalty shoot along with the ball boys and girls will be presented with a goody bag donated by Chelsea FC.

Chelsea hopes to bring Stamford, the club mascot with them, which is certain to be a great attraction especially for the little ones. Ticket are available at the Harlequin Theatre in Redhill town centre or on the gate at Kilnbrow. Kick off is at 2.00pm.

Tickets are from the Harlequin Box office 1737 276500 at a cost of Adults £5 and Children £3.

Weekend Sports Roundup

Gillingham eased their relegation fears with a late winner  against Crawley Town.

The result meant that the Reds are now in 16th place in League One, just 4 points above the drop zone.

Elsewhere, Redhill lost 2  nil at Burgess Hill Town but Merstham enjoyed a good 3 – 2 win at Kiln Brow against Leatherhead.

And South Park beat Ash United 1 nil at home, while Horley Town went down 2 nil at Camberley Town.

Weekend Sports Review

Matt Tubbs scored twice as Crawley beat Walsall 2-1 in their first game in a month.

The Reds, who hadn’t played since the 25th of January, remain just two points clear of the relegation zone, but have 7 games in hand over some of the clubs near the foot of the table.

In the lower leagues, Merstham had a good result on Saturday, winning 3-1 at Corinthian Casuals, while Redhill suffered a 3-1 defeat at Peacehaven and Three Bridges came out 3-0 winners at home. Horley Town suffered a 2-0 defeat away at Wembley, but the result of the day was undoubtably South Park’s 8-0 home thrashing of Alton Town.

Sports Money For Schools

Henry Smith, Crawley MP, has welcomed the news that the Prime Minister is keeping the £150 million a year primary pe and sport premium.

This means that between 2014 and 2020, local primary schools will receive around £1,558,164.

Local primary schools will use the premium to get children doing more sport.

Schools are using the money for a wide range of activities including hiring extra professional coaches and PE specialist teachers, buying new equipment, offering more after-school clubs and delivering holiday and weekend activities.

Weekend Sports Update

The weather once again took its toll on the area’s football at the weekend.

Crawley Town’s League One home encounter with Carlisle was the major local casualty.

Of the few matches that did take place, Chipstead beat Crawley Down Gatwick 4-0 and Merstham drew 2 all at Hastings Utd.
