New signings at Crawley Town FC

Crawley Town Football Club have announced Ashley Nadesan has signed a new two year deal to remain with the club.

The forward becomes Kevin Betsy’s second signing of the summer transfer window.

Nadesan joined the Reds in July 2019 and has made 118 appearances scoring 24 goals.

Speaking on the new deal, Ashley said: “I’m delighted to have signed a new two-year deal with the club, with the blessing of the new manager and the new owners. I have enjoyed every minute of the three years that I’ve been here and I feel like I have a lot of unfinished business. I want to score as many goals as I can this season and I feel that promotion is definitely the target for us.”

On Monday Travis Johnson signed a two-year deal upon the expiration of his contract at Crewe Alexandra. The highly-rated defender became Kevin Betsy’s first signing and is the first new player to join the ranks for the 2022/23 season.
Travis progressed through the youth ranks with Crewe and earned his first professional contract in the summer of 2018. Since then, Johnson has made over 40 appearances for The Railwaymen, including 20 in Sky Bet League One last season.

Speaking on the signing, Manager Kevin Betsy said: “Travis is a very promising acquisition for us, who has played over 20 games in League One last season. He is versatile positionally and is an outstanding 1v1 defender. He has developed well at Crewe and is a well-rounded young man. We had to fight off interest from clubs in a higher division and our own, but we managed to convince him and his representatives that what we will be doing next season would make this the place for him to develop and fulfil his undoubted potential. We are all delighted and would like to place on record our thanks to his representatives and our owners for helping us make this happen.”

Speaking on his move to the Reds, Johnson said: “I am buzzing to get the deal over the line. Ever since I heard about the interest, I have not been able to stop thinking about it. I spoke to the manager and saw the ambition that he has for the club and what he is trying to put in place. The general feel of all the staff members that I have met is good, and everyone seems to be working in sync and looking to achieve the same thing.”

Travis will officially link up with the club on July 1st upon the expiration of his contract at Crewe Alexandra.

Surrey Cricketer, Graham Thorpe, ‘seriously ill’

Former England and Surrey batter Graham Thorpe is “seriously ill” in hospital, the Professional Cricketers’ Association has said.

The 52-year-old played 100 Tests for England between 1993 and 2005, as well as 82 one-day internationals.
He was previously England men’s batting coach but stepped down from the role in February following their 4-0 Ashes defeat by Australia.

Thorpe was appointed head coach of Afghanistan’s men’s team in March.
A statement from the PCA said: “Graham Thorpe has recently fallen seriously ill and is currently in hospital receiving treatment.

“His prognosis is unclear at this stage and we ask for privacy for him and his family at this time.
“Our thoughts are with Graham and his family.”

Thorpe, a stylish left-handed batter, scored 6,744 Test runs for England, including 16 centuries, at an average of 44.66.

He scored an unbeaten 114 in the second innings of his Test debut against Australia and had a Test best of 200 not out, made against New Zealand in 2002.

After retiring in 2005 Thorpe began coaching in Australia, working with New South Wales before returning to England.

He worked as an assistant coach with England alongside Trevor Bayliss and Chris Silverwood, and oversaw England in the Ashes Test at Sydney last year after Silverwood contracted coronavirus.

Surrey, the club where Thorpe spent his entire 17-year first-class career, said: “The thoughts of everyone at the Club are with Graham, his wife Amanda, and family at this time.

“He is an icon of the English game, known by millions of cricket fans and forever a favourite son of Surrey CCC.”
