Sport: Crawley Town and Crawley Wasps join to promote game

Crawley Town and Crawley Wasps football clubs have joined forces to make the sport more accessible to both men and women.

The partnership will include local initiatives such as encouraging fans to watch Crawley Town on Saturday and then Crawley Wasps on Sunday.

Crawley Wasps Chairman Jack Ayles said: “Crawley Wasps is one of the largest all female football clubs in the country, with our senior women’s team competing in the third tier of women’s football, the FA Women’s National league.

“Our ambition is to offer girls and women a safe and professional environment where they can flourish and achieve their dreams of becoming professional footballers. The women’s game presents a huge opportunity for business and brands, with a unique family friendly atmosphere which we have built a solid foundation on with the help of players, staff, parents, and the local community.

“We are very excited to be partnering with Crawley Town to ensure football is accessible and inclusive to the local community. Since I have been Chairman, we have always wanted to become more involved with Crawley Town as we know that working together on joint initiatives will benefit everyone involved.”

More details will be unveiled over the coming season.

Barclays Bank permanently closed its Horley branch on Victoria Road on Friday.  Horley no longer has a high street bank in the town.  Barclays’ report on the closure of the Horley branch, cites a decline in counter transactions with 87% of their branch customers using other ways to do their banking such as online and by telephone.  The next nearest branches are in Redhill and Crawley High Street.

Meanwhile, the Lloyds Banking Group which owns Lloyds and Halifax is to shut 48 branches next year; 41 Lloyds and 7 Halifax.  Three of the Lloyds branches are in Surrey;  Oxted, Dorking and Leatherhead.

Oxted’s branch in Station Road West which will close on the 7th March next year.  With similar reasons to Barclays Horley closure, the Lloyds Bank Closing Branch Review document says it is closing the Oxted site as customers are using it less often with the majority of customers finding alternative ways to bank.  The nearest alternative for Oxted residents is in Caterham.
